Our Dental practice is a family practice in the clearest sense of the word. My Dad, family dentist Dr. Darwin Drewyer, started the practice in 1951 and established it as a cornerstone of downtown Silver Spring until 1961, when he moved to a home/office combination in the Burnt Mills Hills subdivision in White Oak. Essentially, I grew up going to the dentist everyday of my life. As a particularly stubborn child, perhaps, I declared my intention to become a dentist in the second grade and never looked back. It was not until my freshman year in dental school that a few things dawned on me. Number one, I discovered a newfound awe for what my Dad did as I had little idea of the rigor of science and dexterity necessary for the jobs at hand, let alone the incredible training required to achieve that privilege of licensure. Second, I discovered and continue to be rewarded from what I probably did soak in chairside in those formative years: it is all about relationships. My dad's colorful dinner table stories and all of the wonderful characters I met growing up as I checked in after school each day certainly left an indelible impression on me. Sure, there was some attraction to having Dr. in front of my name. I recall visiting the People's Drug store in Hillandale or the J.C. Penney store in Silver Spring and thinking, wow, everyone knows my dad as Dr. Drewyer! Only recently did I come to realize that they were reading the front of his charge card!
My Dad left a legacy of community service, sportsmanship and quality healthcare in his wake. In 1995, I moved the practice to its current location, just a bit more than a mile from my personal and professional starting gate. I am grateful to continue to greet patients with over 50 years of Dr./Patient relationship together in our practice. It is with this legacy in mind that I continue to shape and guide the practice into the 21st Century. Each day, upon awakening to my first conscious breath, I declare that I am on vacation, and, yes, that means you get to join me when I vacation at our dental office.
